Latest News From The Pet Prescription Team Director

The on-line visitation report forms are coming in like crazy. It is wonderful to see how well all of the members visits are going and what we as a team might do to make the visits even more successful. For those of you that are unaware of what a visitation report is last month we began excepting on-line submission of visitation reports. It has given all of our members the ability to submit their visitation reports form on-line. This will not only help us to keep better records as an organization but it will also help us better meet the needs of the facilities we are visiting at. As a volunteer of the Pet Prescription Team it is your responsibility to fill a report out on each and every visit you make.

Did You Know?

Recently it has been brought to our attention that some of the Pet Prescription Team visitation rules have not been followed therefore we thought we would place a reminder to all of our volunteers the protocol while visiting at a facility.

1) Dogs must be on leash at all times

2) Volunteer should report anything in their reports that might be an issue while visiting

3) Volunteer should be wearing their team shirt and all identification of the Pet Prescription Team

4) Dogs should be wearing it's Pet Prescription Team Therapy vest

5) If a volunteer will be unable to make a scheduled visit they will contact the Pet Prescription Team leader for their facility

6) Volunteers will make 6 visits in a calender year and attend 4 Pet Prescription Team meetings in a calender year

This is a new volunteer opportunity with Gerinet Hospice Care based in Downey.

Gerinet Hospice Care serves patients and their families in LA and Orange Counties and has a number of patients in skilled nursing facilities and in private homes in the Whittier and La Habra area that would love a visit from a PPT member. As a Hospice volunteer, you find that it is a very rewarding experience and an opportunity for you to visit one on one with your pet and the patient. Most patients request at least one visit per month, and often times look forward to having visits two to three times per month. For those who are looking for a flexible schedule, Hospice is a perfect match, as you don't have to set your visits on a specific day and time each month.

Each Hospice organization is independent, so if you are already working with Hospice Care of the West or another Hospice organization, you will need to be cleared through Gerinet Hospice Care in order to begin visiting.Clearance includes a general hospice orientation, that will be completed in a day, a health screening, current TB Test, background check, current identification and references.

Dear Pet Prescription Team members and friends,

February has already proven to be an amazing month for the Pet Prescription Team. We had a record attendance at our last meeting which is almost placing us in a need to begin to look for a larger meeting place. The meeting was full of many updates such as facilities, fundraisers, tradeshows and all the activities the PPT is involved with this year. We were thankful to have our guest speaker Oliver Mason from the Cleta Harden facility. As we embark on the special needs program we look forward to all that will be accomplished in the efforts to touch lives with our therapy animals.

In February I had the opportunity to have a meeting with Kaiser Permanente and look at developing an exclusive Pet Therapy Program for Kaiser Permanente using the Pet Prescription Team. After much discussion Kaiser Permanente and the Pet Prescription Team will begin to develop an exclusive therapy program for the Kaiser Permanente facility in Los Angeles. This will be a pilot program which will hopefully lead to additional Kaiser Permanente facilities throughout the Southern California area.

Kaiser Permanente will develop a Policy and Procedure manual that will be tailored for any Pet Prescription Team member that would like to volunteer with their therapy dog at the Kaiser Permanente facility. They also will be developing a five hour orientation which will educate our volunteers on the compliancy aspect when visiting in the Kaiser Permanente facility. The orientation will also include a tour through the facility to help orientate each volunteer as to where they will be visiting. Truly we are beyond excited about this opportunity and believe that this will be a marvelous way to continue our vision as a team. I want to thank Cathy Makshanoff for giving us this contact.

The Cleat Harden Program will begin in March and the preparation that has led to this program has gone smoothly. Each volunteer and dog have gone through their evaluation with flying colors. The orientation meeting on February 23 was full of insightful information by our guest speaker. Her experience in dealing with the Mentally Handicap gave all of us useful information that we will use in the months to come. We are excited to see the results of this program and know it will be a growing experience for all of us.

Thank you for all your continued dedication to go out and visit each month... lives are touched by your willingness to give of your time in such a special way.

Happy visiting to you,

Krystal Emery

Cleta Harden Special Needs Program

Each month we spotlight one of our volunteers on their service as a Pet Prescription Team member. This month we would like to spotlight one of our new programs and also one of the kids that benefited from this new project. This month was the beginning of our new special needs program. It has been a long time in development and as we embarked on this project we truly were beginning a journey on uncharted ground using therapy dogs in this manner. We are happy to report that the first visitation at our facility with the children was a success. We believe all of the volunteers hearts beat a little harder as the vans pulled up with the children. As the children made their way to the training field you could see many of their faces display smiles as they saw the dogs and volunteers waiting for them. The interaction with the dogs and children was truly a touching experience for all of the volunteers in attendance.

Spotllight On Matt

Matt has stolen our hearts over the past 2 months. While visiting at Cleta Harden Matt's loving spirit for dogs and his excitement to participate with each dog has shown us how truly special he is. He was one of the children that we had in mind when thinking about this program months ago. We hoped that he would enjoy running our dogs in Agility and yet we were reserved on our anticipation of how it would work.

When Matt walked in the training yard we put him right to work... gathering all the Agility dogs and having him learn the release word of... GO. His little feet ran like a dickens to beat each dog to the finish line as he would break out in applause at what he and the dog had accomplished. Many of us shared a tear of joy to see how much he enjoyed the opportunity to run our dogs in Agility. This is what our program is about... to touch peoples lives and to make a difference. We believe we made a difference in Matt's life and look forward to the work we will do with him in the months to come.

This is a photo of Sammy which is handled by her owner, Joyce Jensens. In the photo is Jeanne Spears, Administrator Assistant at St. Judes Medical Center. Jeanne has a special fondness for the therapy dogs. Jeanne has shared with Joyce that therapy dogs touched her life while she received chemo treatments for breast cancer sometime ago.

Jeannes experience shows how special these visits are not only to the patients we visit but to all we come in contact on those visits.

Pet Prescription Team at the Family Pet Expo

It's Family Pet Expo time again and as always we are looking forward to working this event. Each year we are amazed by how the public is unaware of how to get their family pets certified. As always we will be asking many of our volunteers to donate 2 hours of their day during this 3 day event.

Each volunteer that dedicates their time will be bringing their Therapy dog to the event and educating those that are in attendance about the Pet Prescription Team and what is involved in the certification process. If you don't enjoy talking to people or answering questions this might not be something you would want to participate in. We want volunteers that are outgoing and approachable. Remember the first impression is the lasting impression and we want to make those we come in contact feel important and be there to answer any questions they might have.
