Healing Hearts Through Pets
Pet Prescription Team

Thank you all for keeping Brielle in your thoughts and prayers. We have received many emails from our members and friends over the past month regarding Brielle so we thought that we would put a permanent link to Brielle's website here where you can find the latest information on her. Brielle Murray Update
We also have put a video together of her journey for Certification as a Pet Prescription Team Therapy dog.

Kaiser Permanente and the Pet Prescription Team began working together on a therapy program at the Los Angeles Medical facility in August. This program had special requirements for all of our volunteers that desired to participate which took a lot of patients and fortitude by all of our volunteers. We are pleased to say that after 2 months we truly are in the swing of things.
We want to give a special thanks to County Supervisor, Don Knabe who was kind enough to help pave the way for clearance for the Pet Prescription Team to commute on the Metrolink and Redline to the Kaiser Facility in Los Angeles. His willingness to work in changing policy for both Metrolink and Redline has made the commuting for some of our volunteers possible. If you would like to thank County Supervisor, Don Knabe for his support of the Pet Prescription Team you may contact him at: Don Knabe
Presently we have 20 volunteers that are visiting at the Kaiser facility either weekly or twice a month. One of the most touching aspects of Kaiser is the Pediatric Oncology and the Pediatric ward. Truly its a very big commitment for the Pet Prescription Team to staff such a large facility and it would not be possible without the dedication of volunteers that have been so dedicated to this project.
We are always looking for more volunteers to help continue the growth and needs of Kaiser. If you are intrested in participating in the Kaiser program please contact us at our office and we will be more then happy to facilitate this for you and your dog.
Some of the requirements are, TB Test,5 hour orientation at the facility, background check on volunteer and compliance orientation at the hospital.
Once all volunteers have met all the requirements they will be visiting on the different wards of the hospital on a weekly schedule.
The on-line visitation report forms are coming in like crazy. It is wonderful to see how well all of the members visits are going and what we as a team might do to make the visits even more successful. For those of you that are unaware of what a visitation report is last month we began excepting on-line submission of visitation reports. It has given all of our members the ability to submit their visitation reports form on-line. This will not only help us to keep better records as an organization but it will also help us better meet the needs of the facilities we are visiting at. As a volunteer of the Pet Prescription Team it is your responsibility to fill a report out on each and every visit you make.

Gerinet Hospice Care serves patients and their families in LA and Orange Counties and has a number of patients in skilled nursing facilities and in private homes in the Whittier and La Habra area that would love a visit from a PPT member. As a Hospice volunteer, you find that it is a very rewarding experience and an opportunity for you to visit one on one with your pet and the patient. Most patients request at least one visit per month, and often times look forward to having visits two to three times per month. For those who are looking for a flexible schedule, Hospice is a perfect match, as you don't have to set your visits on a specific day and time each month.
Each Hospice organization is independent, so if you are already working with Hospice Care of the West or another Hospice organization, you will need to be cleared through Gerinet Hospice Care in order to begin visiting.Clearance includes a general hospice orientation, that will be completed in a day, a health screening, current TB Test, background check, current identification and references.
If you interested in this volunteer opportunity please contact Kathie Sullivan directly at: 562-904-6777.

Next CGC Test will be on October 23, at 10:15 AM. Time slots are in 15 minute time spots. Cost of the CGC test is $15.00. Please schedule your CGC test by calling the Pet Prescription Team office at: 562-694-8090.

Dear Friends & Members,
As we approach the end of the year our thoughts turn to the reality that we are nearing Christmas. Many of us cringe at the thought of beginning that long drawn out process of finding just the right gift for our friends and family members.
In our pocket of society where pampered affluence is rampant, we are often at a loss to know what kind of gifts to buy our friends and loved ones on special occasions. For some people (especially those who "have everything"), the standard gift won't cut it. Nothing in the shopping mall catches our fancy. I have a suggestion. It may not sound expensive or sound very novel, but believe me, it works every time. It's one of those gifts that have great value but no price tag. It can't be lost nor will it ever be forgotten. No problem with size, either. It fits all shapes, any age and every personality. We as volunteers of the Pet Prescription Team give this gift every time we visit someone in need. This ideal gift is... you. Don't forget the unusual value of kindness. That's right give some of yourself away:
Here's a novel gift for you to give this year, "kindness". Kindness braids mercy and grace, humility and gentleness all together. Kindness gives grace, requires humility and asks that we think of others before ourselves.
Ever notice that kindness is most appreciated when life has gone sideways? When your having, " one of those days", kindness speaks that thoughtful word and draws you back like a lifeline.
Kindness is something you and I can do today. A gentle response, being the first to forgive, giving the gift of time, compassion and thoughtfulness. Look for ways today to give ordinary kindness, and you'll find there's nothing ordinary about it and your Christmas shopping for 2010 is finished and you can enjoy the months to come.

Director
