In Loving Memory of Tessa: A Little Dog Who Left an Extraordinary Legacy
Every once in a while, a very special dog comes into the Pet Prescription Team, one that seems to understand the meaning of our mission, Healing Hearts Through Pets, without ever having to be taught. Tessa was one of those dogs.
Last night, at the beautiful age of 15½, our precious Tessa crossed the Rainbow Bridge, leaving behind a legacy of more than 13 years of therapy dog service and countless hearts that were made a little lighter because she came into their lives.
Tessa's life didn't begin easily, but you would never have known it by the love she gave so freely. She had a remarkable gift, something I have witnessed in only a handful of dogs over the years. She knew how to comfort people. She didn't need to perform tricks or do anything extraordinary to make a difference. All she had to do was settle into someone's lap, rest there peacefully, and somehow, in that quiet little moment, remind another human being that they mattered and that they were loved.
Over the years, I have used Tessa's photographs in so many of our videos, presentations, and Pet Prescription Team materials. There was a reason for that. When I wanted people to understand what a therapy dog truly does, I could show them a picture of Tessa. Her gentle presence told the story better than any words I could have written.
And perhaps one of the most touching parts of her story is that Tessa continued visiting until September 25, just a few short weeks before she passed away. At 15½ years old, this remarkable little girl was still doing what she had done for more than 13 years, bringing comfort to people who needed a little love in their lives.
Her devoted owner and longtime Pet Prescription Team volunteer, Adriane, shared something with me that touched my heart. She said she knew there were so many people Tessa had visited over the years who would be waiting for her. What a beautiful thought, to imagine the joy of being reunited with all those lives she once comforted.
Adriane, thank you for sharing your precious little girl with us for all these years. Thank you for your dedication, your faithfulness, and the countless hours you spent helping Tessa give what she had so abundantly, unconditional love. We know your heart is broken, and we grieve with you.
When I think about the thousands of dogs that have been part of the Pet Prescription Team throughout our history, I know that each one has brought something special to our mission. But every once in a while, there is a Tessa. A little dog whose photographs become part of our history, whose gentle spirit becomes part of our story, and whose legacy reminds us why we began this ministry of love in the first place.
Rest peacefully, precious Tessa. Your work here is finished, but the love you gave will continue living in the hearts of those you touched.
You were one little dog, but oh, what an enormous difference you made in this world.
